The IGBT(insulated gate bipolar transistor), the main product of macro and micro science and technology, is the representative product of the third technological revolution of power electronics recognized in the world, and is known as the "CPU" of power converter in the industry. Adopting IGBT for power conversion can improve the efficiency and quality of electricity consumption, which is featured by high efficiency, energy saving and green environmental protection. It is the key supporting technology to solve the problem of energy shortage and reduce carbon emissions. Using IGBT devices can reduce the power consumption of the original power electronic equipment by 10%-40%. According to the data cited by professor Baliga, if 50% of the motors adopt IGBT speed regulation control technology during the 20 years from 1990 to 2010, the global accumulative energy saving will be 41.9 trillion kW·h. At the same time, we will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20.91 trillion kg. The motor produced and used in China is generally lower than the three-level energy efficiency standard. If this standard is to be achieved, the overall energy efficiency of the motor needs to be improved by 5%-8% with IGBT speed-regulating control technology. At that time, the annual energy saving will be about 200 billion kW·h, equivalent to the annual power generation of the two three gorges power stations, and the carbon dioxide emission will be reduced by about 180 billion kg. It can be seen that IGBT has become the core device of energy saving and emission reduction, and is the green core in power electronic equipment.
